US Data Center Map

live

Mapping every announced data center in the US to see where this is all going.

Why

I keep seeing headlines about massive new data centers and wanted to know what the actual picture looks like. Where are they going, how big are they, and what does that do to the grid and water supply in those places. So I built the dataset.

What I found

There are roughly 3,700 operational data centers in the US. Median size is about 10 MW. 80% are under 50 MW. The pipeline has almost a thousand more, with a median of 225 MW. Planned facilities are running 10x the size of what exists. Only 15 facilities over 500 MW are operating today. The pipeline has 125.

Total announced capacity is around 250 GW. The US has about 1,250 GW of generation capacity and adds 50-60 GW per year. The data center pipeline alone is five-plus years of national grid additions. And about half the planned facilities haven’t even published capacity numbers.

The dataset

4,500+ facilities. Capacity, pipeline status, operator, water stress, climate risk, and energy mix. Built from public filings, utility records, news, and sustainability reports.

How much of this actually gets built is anyone’s guess.
